An organelle found in large numbers in most cells, in which the biochemical processes of respiration and energy production occur. It has a double membrane, the inner layer being folded inward to form layers.

Mitochondrial Desires is a camera controlled responsive installation. In the centre of the gallery is a circular pedestal eight feet in diameter and four feet high. Lying on the pedestal is a wire-to-rope splice. Projected along one of the gallery walls is a video document of a pair of hands making the splice. At first this image is obscured by a layer of video noise or snow. As the viewer approaches the pedestal and interacts with the splice, the effect is slowly removed and the image becomes clear. There are five audio speakers placed in the galley and one in the pedestal. This multi-channel audio is generated from the signals of the recorded video and the camera which monitors the room, creating a 5.1 surround sound environment.

The video and audio effects are controlled by a custom computer program which plays and effects the video image and generates the audio tracks in real time. A camera is placed directly above the pedestal and monitors the movements over the pedestal. When a viewers hand or head falls into the camera's frame the video changes. As the camera registers the viewers shadows over the pedestal the software program begins to track those movements in the corresponding location on the video projection by removing the noise effect and revealing the image underneath. At the same time, the signal from the monitoring camera and the recorded video signal are mixed and processed by the software, to create 6 discrete channels of audio. These are then sent out to the individual speakers positioned in the room.

I am interested in the shift from analogue frameworks to digital ones, and how this world-view effects the concept of the human body. The human body has become colonized by technological innovations that can externally replicate internal processes, replace worn out organic parts, and digitize and store bodily information in computer databanks. This mixing of the organic and the technological creates a hybrid entity that we as humans we have not fully conceptualized. This ongoing interference in our bodily processes challenges our definitions of Human. As this continues we directly contest past theories of evolution and creation, leading ultimately to new definitions of life. This alienation from and the exhilaration of discovery towards the technologicalized body is explored in Mitochondreal Desires.

Quicktime video documentation

All images and texts on this site are copyright of Erika Lincoln unless otherwise noted and are not to be reproduced in any form without express consent of the author.
©Erika Lincoln 2008
