Along one wall of the gallery is a large scale video projection picturing a foot in a woolen sock, reaching towards an unclothed back yet never making contact.&nbsp; On the floor, directly in front of the projection, is a pair of the same woolen socks. Inside the socks are audio speakers playing recorded sounds of static electricity generated by rubbing feet along a carpet. Operating in the background is a computer controller program which reads/senses the volume of the recorded sound.&nbsp; As the audio plays the controller software processes the projected video image in continual real time, rapidly stretching and contracting the image. </small></big></span><br> <span style="font-family: Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif; color: rgb(51, 51, 51);"><big><small></small></big></span><br> <span style="font-family: Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif; color: rgb(51, 51, 51);"><big><small>Through Beyond the Skin Effect I temporally expand the charged space that occurs just before touch.&nbsp; Normally this space exists only for an instant: within that split-second external forces and interior emotions converge. It is at this confluence where the surface of the human body meets the environment in which it is placed. The horizontal and vertical movements of the video mimic the body anticipating the pending touch and shock.&nbsp; By visually and aurally mediating this indeterminate space I address the anticipation and apprehension that arise just before one is touched. A singular event becomes a continuous action where nothing is determined.</small></big></span><br> <span style="font-family: Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif; color: rgb(51, 51, 51);"></span></div> <span style="font-family: Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif; color: rgb(51, 51, 51);"><big><small><br> <br> </small></big></span><span style="font-family: Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif; color: rgb(51, 51, 51);">Quicktime <a target="none" href="quicktimes/BeyondtheSkinEffect.mov">video documentation</a></span><br> <span style="font-family: Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif; color: rgb(51, 51, 51);"><big><small><br> </small></big></span><span style="font-family: Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif; color: rgb(51, 51, 51);"><br> <br> <br> <center><img style="width: 320px; height: 213px;" alt="splice" src="artimages/shuffle_detail4.gif">&nbsp;<img style="width: 320px; height: 209px;" alt="" src="artimages/woolsocks_detail1.gif">&nbsp;<img style="width: 320px; height: 209px;" alt="" src="artimages/shuffle2.gif"> <br> <span style="font-family: Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif; color: rgb(51, 51, 51);"><big><small><br> <br> </small> </big></span><small style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51);"><span style="font-family: Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif;" class="style4">All images and texts on this site are copyright of Erika Lincoln unless otherwise noted and are not to be reproduced in any form without express consent of the author.<br> ©Erika Lincoln 2008</span></small> </center> </span> </body> </html>
